Axel Springer engages in the American online news and culture magazine OZY. With OZY, Axel Springer is supplementing its existing early-stage holdings in Silicon Valley.
"OZY is a good example of the new discovery of quality journalism in Silicon Valley,” said Anton Waitz, Managing Director responsible for Axel Springer's early-stage investments in the United States since January 2014. “State-of-the-art in technical and design aspects, OZY intelligently and creatively targets a global audience. We are glad to be involved in the early start-up phase and anticipate fresh momentum as a digital publishing house."
Launched in September 2013 and founded by veteran broadcast journalist and entrepreneur Carlos Watson along with his partner Samir Rao, OZY targets the ‘Change Generation’ – a global audience of age-agnostic, educated and curious readers who aside from just knowing about the daily news, want to learn about the topics and people of tomorrow. Through first-hand reporting and a carefully curated selection of news, OZY both catches readers up on the last 24 hours, and vaults them ahead with profiles on "the new and the next" people, places, trends, technology and ideas that they need to know about.
“In Axel Springer we are gaining a partner with extensive know-how in digital publishing,” said Watson. “They believe what all our investors and all our partners believe -- that OZY is bringing something smarter, fresher and different to the news.”
Headquartered in Mountain View, CA, with offices in New York City and Washington D.C., OZY has staff and contributors across the globe in over a dozen countries. In addition to Axel Springer SE, a circle of well-known backers have invested in OZY, including Laurene Powell Jobs’ Emerson collective, Ron Conway of SV Angels, Vivi Nevo, David Drummond of Google, and Chegg CEO Dan Rosensweig. The site also enjoys partnerships with major U.S. media brands including NPR and USA TODAY.
Axel Springer already has a small holding in the accommodations marketplace AirBnB and the Pixlee photo community. In order to implement further early-stage investments in the United States and to network even more closely in the American digital media sector in future, Axel Springer founded an American subsidiary, Axel Springer Digital Ventures Inc., at the beginning of the year. Its Managing Director is Anton Waitz.
