It’s a safe bet that high-profile sporting events – like the Grand National – can temporarily distract online property buyers from searching for their dream home.
The UK’s leading UK property website Rightmove, found that visits via computers dropped by 15% and from mobile devices by 12% as Pineau De Re won the famous Aintree horse race last weekend, which was surrounded by controversy.
By 4.45pm, traffic at the site, which includes overseas property listings and information, was back to normal levels, perhaps with a lucky few checking out what overseas property they could afford to buy with their winnings
Matthew James, Head of Communications at Rightmove, says, “This isn’t the first time that we’ve seen a stand-out sporting event hit our traffic. It happened last year when Andy Murray served for Wimbledon glory and in 2012 when we picked up three dips on Super Saturday which tallied perfectly with Greg Rutherford, Jess Ennis and Mo Farah winning gold.
“These are national distractions which show up as blips on our traffic charts, but it doesn’t take long for people to come back after the event finishes, especially as more and more people are searching Rightmove using their mobile."
