Saudi-based classifieds site Dubizzle.com is making millions off their used numbers plates category that launched in July. Since then 4,500 ads, worth more than AED 130 million ($35.4 million U.S.) have been listed.
People buy and sell number plates for cars with a particular number sequence that’s easy to remember or means something in the corresponding letter numbers in Arabic alphabet. In just three months the category has become the site’s second largest sub-category behind “used cars”.
“The average asking price per plate is AED 32,000 ($8,700 U.S), and we have already seen several plates listed worth over AED 1 million ($272,260 U.S), including a 2-digit plate for AED 7 million ($1.9 million U.S.), Jean-Pierre Mondalek, general manager of Motors at Dubizzle told AIM Group.
