Home rental listing site Airbnb is said to be developing a service for booking air travel, according to a report by Bloomberg.
The company recently announced a new Trips feature which will include guided tours, nights out with locals, and meetups, in what its CEO Brian Chesky says is a bid to make travel 'magical again'.
The travel booking service - known within the company as Flights - looks to be an extension of this feature and will place the company in competition with Priceline Group Inc. and Expedia Inc.
Airbnb may acquire an online travel agency or license data from firms such as Amadeus IT, Group SA or Sabre Corp, to assist it in this venture, said those close to the project.
It's reported that Airbnb aims to get Flights off the ground before it pursues an initial public offering, which is likely in the next 18 months.
