SEAT and Telefónica promote the use of blockchain in Spain's automotive industry
Telefónica, the telecommunications multinational, has signed an agreement with the SEAT car company to promote digitalization in the automotive industry through the development of innovative initiatives, which include the application of blockchain technology for the supply chain of vehicular parts at the SEAT headquarters, located in its industrial complex in Martorell, Catalonia.
The agreement between the two Spanish companies was announced through an official communication on the Telefónica website, which indicated that it was signed by the president of SEAT, Luca de Meo, and the president of Telefónica España, Luis Miguel Gilpérez.
In this way, the Spanish automobile company will count on Telefónica as a provider of information technologies, an alliance that responds to the SEAT guidelines of wanting to position itself as a reference company in terms of connected and digitized mobility.
In general terms, the communication states that SEAT and Telefónica will work together on new technological solutions for mobility in cities and urban areas (through data sharing), for 5G networks and their application in connected cars and autonomous, and for the promotion of industry 4.0 in the vehicle manufacturing process, where they will implement distributed accounting technology. So these three areas of work will be the main ones in the framework of this alliance.
With regard to blockchain technology, they indicated that "the collaboration also includes the development and implementation of Industry 4.0 initiatives in the vehicle manufacturing process. In this sense, Telefónica and SEAT collaborate on a proof of concept based on blockchain technology to improve the traceability of parts within the supply chain of the Martorell factory. "
The presidents of both companies issued their respective points of view. For his part, the president of Telefónica Spain, Luis Miguel Gilpérez, stated the following:
"Undoubtedly, the new technologies are going to provoke a real revolution in the automolocomoción sector and in Telefónica we want to be the reference partner that helps SEAT to lead this new stage. How the Big Data and Blockchain will influence the sector or how the 5G will be determinant for the future of the autonomous and connected car, are some of the innovations that Telefónica and SEAT are going to lead together.”
In turn, the president of SEAT, Luca de Meo expressed the following:
"With this agreement, SEAT is consolidated as a benchmark in the digitization of the sector. Having Telefónica as a strategic partnership allows us to take a big step forward in our commitment to offer mobility solutions that facilitate
life to the driver inside our vehicles.”
Also, Luca de Meo said that "this collaboration will also allow us to develop, through technology, projects that promote our production processes and relationships with suppliers."
Therefore, SEAT joins the list of companies in the automotive sector that are considering the technology of distributed accounting for the improvement of their processes and the set of companies from different sectors that are implementing it for the optimization of supply chains. Meanwhile, Telefónica is emerging as a company that is constantly promoting new blockchain applications in various sectors of society.
