Fleet, the first peer-to-peer rental service in Ireland is now available in the northern region, with Shelbourne Motor Group being one of the first comapnies to list cars on the startup's app.
It's something like an Airbnb style car rental business, offering car owners the chance to earn a little extra for listing their vehicles - up to £1,000 a month.
So far, the app has had around 25,000 downloads and about 14,000 active users with the current 346 listings on the website. There are approximately 940,000 cars registered in both rural and urban areas in the north already and car owners in the region can now partake in the new service.
Owners of listed cars on the site are already earning varying amounts depending on the make of vehicle, and dozens of owners using the platform are earning between £530 and £1,000 a month. AXA, a global insurance provider is working with Fleet, providing insurance for all vehicle usage on the site and ensuring that the rental service, vehicles, renters, and rentees are fully protected and covered.
Fleet officially launched six months ago in the Republic of Ireland by Wicklow entrepreneur Maurice Sheehy. He has plans to further expanding the brand both domestically and internationally and is hoping to raise €1.5 million this year to fund the expansion into Britain. It is already in the early-state of partnership discussions with companies.
Sheehy says he had always planned to set up in Northern Ireland and explains how he drew inspiration from Airbnb.
“Fleet was developed when we saw a gap for this type of service in the market. Peer to peer services of many varieties have taken off in Ireland and worldwide especially after the success of Airbnb and we saw the opportunity to help make our customers' cars work harder for them and earn them money whilst providing a cost-effective alternative to traditional car rental platforms who have higher price points, overheads and red tape. It was always a goal to set up our service in Northern Ireland as soon as possible and try to cover the whole island of Ireland.”
