One of the largest debates over autonomous cars is over if they will be privately owned cars or shared among several people or companies. Several people claim they will all be shared, since there isn't a reason to own a car at home when you can just summon one when needed. Everyone has always assumed this was a silly discussion to have, like when people debated over creating a dedicated media room with an expensive large screened TV when movie theaters exist. Most people seem to assume that self-driving vehicles will be the equivalent of home media rooms or movie theaters.
This is why it's very exciting to hear that Hertz rental car in the UK is changing their minivans into "cinema cars" and this may become the go-to model for future autonomous cars. Hertz says:
"Six bespoke Ford Galaxy MPVs have been transformed by our team of top designers. Gone are the middle-row seats, in comes cinema-style seating, vast legroom, a huge screen and a state-of-the-art sound system. And best of all, no one will shush you for daring to rustle your popcorn."
"It’s been a fun job,” says Ian, whose favorite feature is the ambient lighting, which – when the black-out blinds are lowered – fills the cabin-turned-cinema with a soft glow, creating a perfect movie-watching environment.
Just years ago, Steven M. Johnson initially thought self-driving cars would be similar to a moving den, but the big screen TVs in Hertz's vans certainly help to pass the time.
