Driving a car is an essential part of the American ideal, so much so that few people can imagine a world without a car. However, purchasing insurance and keeping track of a car's title has usually been complicated.
A nonprofit group based in Berkeley, California, is leading the charge to bring block-chains into the way we pay for transportation and simplify this aspect of our vehicle-driven lives. The Mobility Open Blockchain Initiative (Mobi) was launched in May "to explore block-chain for use in a new digital mobility ecosystem that could make transportation safer, more affordable, and more widely accessible."
The initiative is partnering with major global manufacturers such as GM, Ford and Groupe Renault. Its work will range from sourcing auto parts to ride-sharing services.
