Self-employment has been slowly but surely becoming a less popular trend in the United States. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the U.S has seen a drop in self-employment between 1994-2015, with 12.1 % of the population being self-employed in 1994, and 10.1% of the population being self-employed in 2015. Considering all of the benefits self-employment has to offer, such as independence, control, freedom from routine, and financial reward, this downward-spiraling trend can result in less flexibility and opportunity in the American workforce.
