Many workers now find themselves as part of the “gig economy”. Almost 16% of Americans were employed in alternative work as of November 2017. This alternative work includes contract firms, on-call jobs, temporary help, and independent contracts.
No clear consensus have been reached on if this “gig economy” is a positive or negative thing. This kind of temporary work has the benefit of more flexible job opportunities, but have drawbacks such as lack of health benefits. Either way, it seems as if the gig economy is not going anywhere soon. With the advent of a global economy, and the connectivity offered by the internet, the demand for this type of work is bound to expand.
The job field seems to be one that evolves with the social and economic landscape of the times. So it could be wise to look out for trends like these to stay one step ahead of the market.
