The United State's first used electric and hybrid car retailer has started up just this year in Naperville, Illinois.
Current Automotive co-founders Seneca Giese and Trip Jacobs say they want to be leaders in a niche area of the electric vehicle market that is projected grow in demand as technology advances.
Since their website - currentautomotive.com - launched in July, the entrepreneurs have sold cars to customers in 27 states across the United States. And now they’ve opened a headquarters just east of Ogden Avenue at 1551 W. Jefferson St. where customers learn about the benefits of driving an electric vehicle and test drive one.
“The real goal is to educate people,” Jacobs said. “We want them to come to us if they have questions.”
Jacobs brings lifetime of experience in the automobile industry as a member of the Bill Jacobs family, which operates several dealerships in Naperville. He remembers growing up and working at his family’s dealerships in high school and throughout the summers while in college.
Wanting to prove himself, Jacobs went to work for Tesla, serving as store manager at Tesla Chicago for two years before returning to the family business.
Jacobs said Tesla did a lot of things well compared to a traditional automotive business model and vice versa.
“(Current Automotive) is what grew out of it,” Jacobs said. “Buying a car should be easy and fun. You should be able to buy without all the hassle. We’re trying to make it easy and fun again.”
That same enthusiasm is shared by business partner Giese, who worked for Tesla for nearly nine years and helped launch and head up the company’s certified pre-owned program in North America.
