Lyft is preparing to launch a brand new "Green Mode" to their mobile app which will allow consumers to request a hybrid or electric car only.
The Green Mode options have already launched in Seattle and the company will being rolling the option out to other portions of the United States soon. Lyft intends to add "thousands" of electric cars onto their platform during this year.
Lyft's blog also showed screenshots from their Green Mode that shows other options for when consumers request a ride. The mode won't divide hybrids and electrics cars up, meaning the Green Mode will choose either vehicle type depending on what is around the consumer.
There is currently no indication how many electric or hybrid cars Lyft has in their fleet, but COO Jon McNeill recently stated that within the Seattle market electric cars have a "relatively high" population.
Lyft is also going to introduce electric cars into their Express Drive feature. Express Drive will allow drivers to rent a vehicle for driving around through Lyft. The drivers can now also rent electric cars which will include unlimited car charging within the weekly car rental rates. Express Drive's electric car option will begin in Atlanta and Seattle and then begin operating in other markets as well.
Green Mode is just another effort in Lyft's Green Cities push. In 2018, Lyft announced that all their rides are now carbon neutral thanks to carbon offset purchases. All electric charging Lyft does will be completely done using renewable electricity sources.
Lyft also started up their Lyft Scooter program in 2018. This electric scooter program in now up and running in nine cities. The company also hired a Apple and Tesla executive to begin building out their electric bike and scooter programs.
