“We launched a couple of years ago, and what differentiates us from other sites is that we focus on people. We developed a matching algorithm which pairs people up based on compatibility,” said Gatzen.
Gatzen further elaborated, “Cambridge University psychologists have developed for us, 20 most relevant questions about potential flatmates’ lifestyles, living habits, even how messy they are, which then helps toward the process of match up individuals who are looking to share a flat.”
According to Gatzen, Ideal Flatmate has experienced a tremendous growth spurt in the last year or so, as people are discovering the benefits of finding a flatmate via the platform. “People really like the concept of matching up. Previous websites have been much more about property… the look or the location of the property, and less about the actual people who live in them. We feel that who you live with affects your happiness far more than the size or location of a room,” stated Gatzen.
Ideal Flatmate conducted focus groups in order to understand what users were interested in most. “All the focus groups we've done concluded that the most important thing, is getting on with the people. If you don't know the people you live with you can have a terrible time,” said Gatzen.
The site also offers Facebook and LinkedIn plugins, which helps users further check out their potential flatmates for compatibility before moving in with them.
We met up with Gatzen at the Property Portal Watch Madrid 2018 Conference, Ideal Flatmate’s first PPW Conference. When we asked Gatzen what his company was looking to take away from the conference, he said,
“We are looking to learn more about what's going on globally with portals and marketplaces, as well as make some connections. We're just launching our third funding round, so we're going to meet some investors.”
