Apple, one of the world's most recognizable technology companies, is rumored to be interested in buying Drive.ai, an autonomous vehicle company developing a self-driving taxi cab. This is yet another indicator that Apple is continuing to make efforts to establish themselves in the autonomous car industry.
It has been reported that is Apple does end up buying Drive.ai they will also add several new engineers to the team.
Currently Drive.ai has raised around $77 million in funds and back in 2017 was valued at around $200 million.
At the time, Drive.ai is going under some reorganization. The company replaced their CEO and is lowering their current goals to make them more realistic and less ambitious.
Apple's own self-driving efforts are also changing. At the beginning of this year, Apple laid off around 200 employees from their autonomous effort named Project Titan.
Potentially purchasing Drive.ai isn't the only effort Apple might be making to further their autonomous driving efforts. A few months ago the company was reported to be talking with lidar companies in hopes to creating easier to make and cheaper sensors for self-driving cars.
At the time it isn't clear if Apple will continue to focus on their in-house autonomous efforts or if they will only be a supplier to other self-driving manufacturers. Some sources have stated that Apple's lidar efforts are to better control the overall design of autonomous cars and the company is said to have their own lidar sensors being developed from inside the company.
