Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturing company, has been producing their electric truck with a variety of safety measures, including several airbags, to ensure overall ride safety. Even though airbags are a proven safety measure for all kinds of vehicles, but the company has recently filed their own patent for a new kind of airbag installed between seats.
The patent called the "Airbag Arrangement for Protection in a Far-Side Vehicular Crash," is an airbag with better placement within vehicles that have captain car seats.
Captain seats within cars are installed in ways that often leave gaps in between the seats and Rivian believes that during far-side collisions passengers can often be thrown about the vehicle cabin too much.
The company's airbags are installed to fill these captain seat gaps and can be installed in a variety of formations and arrangements within the vehicle.
"A pair of airbags may be deployed to fill an interior space in a vehicle to support persons in a vehicle that is involved in a side crash, particularly, a person facing a far-side crash," Rivian's description of the patent stated.
Rivian launched their R1S electric SUV and R1T electric truck last year which was generally met with critical acclaim because of their electric capabilities and off-road options. The R1T is expected to be put into full production by 2020.
Rivian has been investor friendly from companies like Ford and Amazon. Jeff Bezos, the CEO of the online retail company Amazon, also recently announced that the company would be using 100,000 of Rivian's electric vans as delivery vehicles as an effort to push Amazon toward carbon neutrality.
Amazon's Senior Vice President of Operations, David Clark, said:
Our fleet is Electrifying! Thrilled to announce the order of 100,000 electric delivery vehicles - the largest order of electric delivery vehicles ever. Look out for the new vans starting in 2021. pic.twitter.com/y5qYpuy2WP — Dave Clark (@davehclark) September 19, 2019
″[We] will have prototypes on the road next year, but 100,000 deployed by 2024," Bezos said recently. "So a lot of these things, we don't have magic crystal balls to look into the future, but those are a pretty good timeline."
