Makarim will resign immediately and be hired onto President Joko Widodo's executive cabinet.
President of Gojek Andre Soelistyo and company Co-Founder Kevin Aluwi will become the company's co-CEOs.
“We are very proud that our founder will play such a significant role in moving Indonesia onto the global stage. It is unprecedented for a passionate local founder’s vision to be recognized as a model that can be up-scaled to help the development of an entire country,” a company spokesperson said.
Gojek was Indonesia's first company evaluated at around $1 billion and recently had even been valued at $10 billion making it one of the biggest companies in the region. Since starting up back in 2010 the ride-hailing platform has signed up over 2 million drivers and partnered with over 400,000 merchants.
This announcement comes only recently after President Widodo started the second term of his presidency. The President had stated before that he wanted to bring in more business veterans onto his cabinet.
“We have planned for this possibility and there will be no disruption to our business. We will make an announcement on what this news means for Gojek within the next few days. We respect the process set out by the President and will not make a further comment until there is an official announcement from the Palace,” the spokesperson added.
Makarim is only 35 and stated that he is honored to be joining the cabinet and become a minister.
“I am very happy to be here today as it shows we are ready for innovation and to move forward,” he recently said. He didn't mention what his exact position will be on the cabinet but did say that an announcement covering that will come within a week or so.
