The Ministry of Family and Equal Opportunities of the Junta de Castilla y León recently hosted in Valladolid a new edition of the STEM Talent Girl project.

It's an initiative that, with the aim of inspiring, educating, and empowering the next generation of women leaders in science and technology, has the support of multiple major European companies like Campofrío.

To contribute to fostering female talent, Campofrío will put its experienced STEM professionals at the service of the youth and will organize visits to its factories and laboratories so that the participants can see, in the first person, how their work is.

“In Campofrío we have set ourselves as a mission to act as a responsible food company implementing practices that contribute to the positive development of our communities, including the commitment to those initiatives that effectively promote equality, diversity and reconciliation between professional and personal life,” explains José Antonio Ortuño, Director of CSR of Campofrío.

STEM Talent Girl is the flagship project in Spain for the promotion of vocations and scientific and technological talent in the female population. After three previous editions, in this 2019/20 STEM Talent Girl school year, it will be implemented in seven provinces of Castilla y León, including Burgos, with the participation of about 500 students from more than 130 educational centers in the region.

It is estimated that STEM careers (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) will account for - in less than ten years - 50% of the professions in Spain, a country where only ten out of every thousand students opt for this type of university education, and of which only 26% are women.

Two programs

The first program developed by the Stem Talent Girl project is known as ‘SCIENCE FOR HER’ aimed at students in 3rd and 4th ESO. In this program their vocations are promoted through masterclass and professional observation sessions in companies with mentors, as well as through technological workshops. This course will hold a total of 49 masterclass in Castilla y León and will be open so that the families of students and classmates or anyone interested can attend.

The second of the programs is 'WOMEN MENTOR', based on mentorships and aimed at high school students. The students are advised by STEM professionals who accompany and guide their professional development and with whom they develop research projects. Each student has a mentor assigned to guide her professionally and monitor her monthly, providing references and help in her areas of interest.

Uniquely, the STEM Talent Girl project will have a virtual platform that will allow the mentoring of students through videoconferencing and online masterclass.
