Amidst high 3D camera sales and quiet layoffs, Matterport has released a feature to further help sellers more easily create virtual tours of their properties for sale.

Matterport has released an app for the iPhone that offers a way for anyone to create, edit, and post high-quality virtual tours with just the use of your mobile device.

Powered by Cortex, an AI platform and deep learning neural network, the app (dubbed Matterport for iPhone) analyzes 3D spatial data captured from Matterport’s Pro2 camera and a number of Lidar cameras, 360 cameras, and now, smartphones to create stunning 3D visuals of a space

RJ Pittman, CEO of Matterport, said:

"With billions of square feet captured in more than 80 countries, Matterport has created the standard for 3D capture to digitize the built world. Today marks our first step to empower billions of smartphone users to try Matterport for themselves. Matterport for iPhone introduces the world to our advanced spatial data capture and Cortex AI technologies in an easy-to-use app that enables anyone to capture and share 3D spaces with friends, family or colleagues."

The Matterport Capture app can be utilized in a number of ways:

  • Agents can scan a property with just their iPhone to instantly create a 3D digital twin of a property listing
  • Homeowners can share digital twins of a room in their homes to get quotes for remodeling or show possible damage to send to their insurance companies for repair or more accurate estimates
  • Easy sharing between iPhone users
  • Ease of use for interior designers to capture a space
  • Contractors can efficiently document stages of progression during the construction or renovation process
  • Property owners can create virtual tours of their spaces for better booking and rental generation
  • Office space visual capture to aid in business recruitment processes

Japjit Tulsi, CTO of Matterport, said:

"We have been hard at work advancing the capability of the Matterport platform to support 3D capture from a range of new digital capture devices over the past two years. Matterport for iPhone marks an important milestone in our capability to create stunning 3D digital twins of any space using the phone in your pocket.”

Matterport is showing once again, that it is prepared for whatever impact the virus brings to the market. It's continued innovation is proving that the chaos of the pandemic is forcing the hand of companies to churn out new technologies and services faster than they would have under normal circumstances.
