The REA Group, owner of realestate.com.au, has announced that it has entered into a new 5-year data and content licensing deal with RP Data. While the announcement doesn’t go into specifics, it does say that the new deal supersedes the current agreements in place between the two companies. What could this mean for RP Data's rumoured entry into the portal market and realestate.com.au competition with domain.com.au?
realestate.com.au had been licensing data to RP Data since 2004 when realestate.com.au acquired property.com.au from RP Data. In addition, RP Data has been selling consumer property reports on the realestate.com.au site. This new agreement refers to a strategic alliance that may mean that RP Data will continue to licence the data from realestate.com.au and RP Data may share property sales data with realestate.com.au. If so, this will allow realestate.com.au to enhnace their content and compete with recent product releases from domain.com.au including agent reported sales data on their site.
In 2004, RP Data and realestate.com.au also entered into a non-compete agreement. Now it is rumoured that RP Data may be entering the property portal market later this year. This strategic alliance could be a good move by realestate.com.au to curb the entry into the market of a new competitor. It wouldnt be surprising to see that as part of the strategic alliance, RP Data and realestate.com.au agreeing not to tread on each other's toes. We will have to wait and see what happens.
