Mobile property search seems to be taking off in Australia, especially for market leader realestate.com.au, which said it was seeing “exponential” growth in traffic to its mobile website in December.
In fact, the CEO of realestate.com.au parent company REA Group has described mobile as a “critical device in the medium to long term” in a recent interview with zdnet.com.au.
“We're seeing north of 10 per cent growth per month, with well over 150,000 unique users per month additional to the Internet site," REA Group CEO Greg Ellis told the website. "So that's not substitution traffic, but additional. We are also seeing varying peak times for both — more users are on the website during the week, with the mobile site seeing more traffic over the weekend."
Ellis also had positive things to say about the effects of the global financial crisis on realestate.com.au, saying it pushed real estate agents to re-think the cost of print advertising.
While Ellis was optimistic about mobile search realestate.com.au, his estimate of 150,000 unique users per month is well below the figure quoted by realestate.com.au for October 2009, when it said it saw 248,000 unique users. At the time, realestate.com.au said this was an increase of 370 percent since its mobile website was relaunched early last year.
