REA Group is implementing a new Cloud-based solution from VMware to deal with increased traffic and aid overseas expansion.
REA Group claims its portfolio of websites is visited by over 11 million unique browsers each month, with realcommercial.com.au, squarefoot.com.hk, realestate.com.au and casa.it all hitting traffic records over the past 12 months. REA Group head of IT operations James Wilson told cio.com.au that his team is focused on keeping up with these traffic increases, and that the company wants to target more overseas markets.
"Using a hybrid Cloud means we can take a cost intensive three month project down to a one week project with some minimal investment," Wilson is quoted as saying. "But the real value for me with Cloud computing is not necessary cost but our agility and speed to market."
Wilson also explained to itnews.com.au that REA Group plans to move into a production environment based on VMware's vSphere 5.0 over the next three months for its Australian data centres, and for its Amsterdam-based European centres by the end of the year.
vSphere 5.0 has just been released, and VMware says the product will support virtual machines that are up to four times more powerful than previous versions with up to 1 terabyte of memory and 32 virtual CPUs.
