If ever an applicant felt that their resume did not represent them well, and that they should have had a face-to-face introduction instead, the HireVue app seems to have been tailor-made for just such a task.
The HireVue uses a mixture of video interviewing and artificial intelligence to make the recruitment process more efficient and match the right candidates to the right job.
Recruitment can be challenging. With literally hundreds of applicants going for the same position, needing to read through all the resumes, and weeding out the candidates who do not fit the criteria, after which the actual interviewing process can take as much time if not more as the initial steps. Unfortunately it’s not any less stressful for the job seeker either.
Step in technology. A new software app, HireVue, is looking to make things easier and more streamlined, with its video interview intelligence program. It promises to do the “heavy lifting” making way for the recruiter/company to be able to screen multiple candidates at once.
Video interview apps are nothing new, but this one is the first of its kind, that has successfully integrated a live interview platform.
“Talent Acquisition Leaders are expected to deliver the right candidates at lightning speeds, but traditional recruiting practices mean your recruiters typically have to sacrifice speed for quality,” states the HireVue site’s opening line. The company claims that with HireVue, users get both speed and quality in a job applications.
“It’s all the science from the last 50 years being empowered by the technology of today,” said Hirevue CEO and founder Mark Newman. He introduced the platform in 2004 and has been running a ‘Series A’ crowdfund since 2008. Over that time, they’ve raised more than $93 million.
The HireVue process begins with a potential employer setting up interview questions for a specific position. The applicant sets up an account and finds the corresponding interview. With a camera and a microphone (can be a smart device), the candidate answers interview questions over video.
Since most of the interviews are conducted solo, without the employer present, if the job applicant is not satisfied with his/her answers, they can record their answers over and over again until they are happy with the final version, so to make the right impression on the employer.
HireVue CTO Loren Larsen told Richard Feloni of Business Insider that the videos are intentionally low resolution, so to allow the interviewee to focus on the way they are answering the interview questions, instead of fixating on their own face.
The artificial intelligence factor comes into play after the interview is completed. The HireVue computer program examines visual and verbal cues that come with an ideal job candidate. It compares word choice, facial movements, body language, and tone to help employers find the very best candidate.
“HireVue uses a combination of proprietary voice recognition software and licensed facial recognition software in tandem with a ranking algorithm to determine which candidates most resemble the ideal candidate,” Feloni said. “The ideal candidate is a composite of traits triggered by body language, tone, and key words gathered from analyses of the existing best members of a particular role.”
The recruiter can specify which traits they prefer for a certain position, or the app will test candidates based on default settings. After the app reports which candidates made the best impressions, it will go into a file where recruiters can easily compare the results and choose the best applicant.
Recruiters still have the final say on who they hire, and it’s impossible to operate the software without this integral factor. The app is not intended to eliminate jobs, only to help in cutting down hours which a recruiting team spends going through resumes and making their decisions.
