Cavalry, the freelancer employment marketplace that was founded in January 2018 by former MullenLowe Profero managing director Dave Bentley and Razorfish’s previous senior tech lead Nick Stevens, has completed its initial seed funding and surpassed early growth targets.
The firm hopes they are on track to become a leading freelance marketplace for artisans and those in digital and communication industries after their powerful head-start.
Cavalry was created by the aforementioned pair of Bentley and Stevens, and developed with the hopes of improving how employers, organizations, and freelances can interact and connect with one another. Currently, the company has over 1000 local freelancers and companies on board.
“We have started off really strongly, and to be honest, while we recognised the value of what Cavalry could offer we have been overwhelmed by the support we’ve received from the industry, which is clearly looking for an easier and more strategic way of finding and working with freelancers,” said Bentley.
“Securing funding with the quality of investors we have is a great indication of the potential of Cavalry and will enable us to take our business to the next stage,” he added. “This includes ramping up our product development and growth activities as well as onboarding specialist expertise across the technical development, business development and customer relationships areas of the business.”
Utilizing its broad and active freelance userbase, Cavalry’s mission is to streamline the hiring process for companies and make it easier to team-build with the resources provided. With its extensive and active freelance member base, Cavalry’s goal is to make it easy for companies to find and build an extended team of freelancers to rely on. This helps companies to shift from being “reactionary” to a more controlled and organization-oriented approach, since it offers companies choices like finding freelancers based on their needs. Sometimes it’s an urgent project (“Gig Alert”) and sometimes the database needs to be gleaned through and the worker hand-picked based on Cavalry’s search filters (like expertise, skills, availability, rate, and reputation). Those chosen can be added to the company roster and rated and reviewed whenever.

Coming down the pipe we have a rich reputation system, time sheeting and new payment models, as well as working on a few other innovative ways to build a more flexible and robust freelancing industry.”
Cavalry’s main clientele are currently advertising agencies; however, it is also bringing it a more diverse pool of companies that need creative, communication, and digital freelance aid – PR agencies like One Green Bean, tech ventures like Kounta, and startups like BeCOme just to name a few.
