San Francisco-based Cruise is looking to make its self-driving vehicles available to Uber customers in the city by 2018, according to a new report.
It’s one more entanglement in an increasingly complex network of investments and partnerships between tech companies, auto makers and autonomous vehicle companies.
Cruises’s partnership with ride-hailing company Uber Technologies Inc. shows a growing distance between General Motors, which owns Cruise, and Uber’s rival Lyft, The Information reported Wednesday.
GM had committed to launching autonomous vehicles with Lyft as part of a partnership between the two, where GM invested $500 million in Lyft.
“While the alliance hasn’t been publicly dissolved, Lyft also has moved on by launching its own autonomous vehicle development unit and working with GM’s rivals,” The Information said. “GM, meanwhile, has been exploring launching its own ride-hailing service as a potential future rival to Lyft and Uber, and has put such efforts under Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt, reporting to GM President Dan Ammann.”
Lyft doesn’t have plans to deploy autonomous vehicles with GM, a source told the news site.
