Google has teamed with local online education platform Coursera on a new IT professionals certificate aimed at filling the talent shortage for the tech specialty.
The IT Support Professional Certificate program is a six-course certification designed by Alphabet’s Google to bring beginners up to entry-level job readiness in eight to 12 months using the Mountain View startup’s platform, according to a blog post. At $49 per month, the program starts with the basics of IT and ends with more advanced tech skills.
The new program comes as Silicon Valley’s largest tech employers — including Google, Facebook, and Apple — compete in a limited talent pool.
For Google, it’s a way to train up potential future employees and add find more diverse candidates who might not otherwise apply.
“Google has long faced an issue that many other companies also contend with — we had open IT support roles, and not enough qualified candidates to fill them,” the company said on the program’s FAQ page. “We decided to build an IT training program on Coursera, created entirely by Googlers who are experts in IT support so that this training could be available to everyone.”
Coursera said there are some 150,000 unfilled IT support jobs in the U.S. alone.
Throughout the course, Google employees will share their own backgrounds and perspectives on IT, the company said in the blog post.
