Data from job portal Indeed shows that retailers are scrambling to secure holiday season workers one month earlier than the previous year, suggesting a stronger demand from consumers.
In 2015 more than one in four retail workers hired in the further quarter started their job in October; the highest share on record since the 1930’s. The start of the holiday season has also started early for retailers with many anticipating a shopper spike before Halloween instead of Thanksgiving.
With unemployment holding around 5 per cent for the past year, there are fewer workers available. In addition to this, retailers are facing tougher holiday hiring competition from logistics firms and distribution centers, which have grown with e-commerce.
