Nina Saeed, CEO, and Co-Founder of alsoug.com attended this year’s Global Online Marketplaces Summit in Miami, we had a chance to sit down with Saeed to discuss her company, the Summit, and the classifieds marketplace, among other things.
Saeed described alsoug.com as very local and very focused, which sets the company apart from its competitors. Established in 2015, alsoug.com was built exclusively for Sudan and is one of the largest free online classifieds in the Northeast African country, charging for increased visibility for ads and business accounts.
The horizontal offers the opportunity to buy and sell new and used mobiles, vehicles, homes, land, and even makes it possible for users to post or search for jobs. According to SimilarWeb alsoug.com had 350,000 visits in April of this year.
We asked Saeed what, in her opinion, is the current most pressing issue with the portal world? “Facebook,” stated Saeed without hesitation. “Online classifieds and/or portals can overcome Facebook and will always have a competitive edge but the fact that Facebook has the monopoly position, in terms of the amount of people, online, that it dominates, it means that it will be quite a frustrating competitor.”
This year was alsoug.com’s first time at the Global Online Marketplaces Summit, and although Saeed found it very interesting, she stated that Simon Baker’s MasterClass was definitely a highlight for her. Saeed found the MasterClass very useful. She compared her team’s approach to obstacles encountered during the day-to-day operations and the many different options in resolving them, to Baker’s take on the same challenges. Due to his vast experience in the online marketplaces field, Baker can confidently say ‘this is the best option’, and that’s admirable.
