The Australian government has set its sights on reducing unemployment, particularly in the youth, and has prioritized it. JobGetter, the Australian job tech company, has earned a spot amongst the Deputy Premier’s Youth Employment Innovation Challenge, a grant program that aims to innovate in order to help young Australians into the workforce.
The Youth Employment Challenge will run over two years and was initiated by Deputy Premier John Barilaro to find innovative ways to combat a rising unemployment rate for 15 to 24 year-olds in specific parts of NSW.
Youth unemployment rates in areas like Central Coast and Hunter, Illawarra, Southern Highlands/Shoalhaven, Western Sydney, New England/North West, and North Coast hover around 20% and are as high as 29% in some areas. Finding opportunities for youth is all-important to both local and state Governments.
JobGetter’s community approach to getting people into work, plus their innovative use of digital engagement was one of the most appealing aspects of their “It Takes a Village” proposal.
“We realise there simply isn’t one easy fix to this big problem,” said Fiona Anson, CEO of JobGetter. “Bringing a host of solution providers, including local government, education, job agencies, major local employers, community leaders and groups as well as teachers, parents and peers in one mobile enabled digital environment with multiple touch points of influence is the best way to start to move the needle on this problem.”
No doubt JobGetter’s track record of lowering unemployment in regions and collaborating across communities also counted towards their success in ob- taining the grant. Before rebranding to JobGetter, their “Workible” solution was implemented in partnership with the GPT Group in Wollongong to help place people into jobs in the newly-expanded shopping centre.
“Leadership at GPT wanted to ensure the solution we worked together on was as inclusive across the entire community as possible which meant building innovative solutions specifically catering to disadvantaged groups. Working with the community, schools, job agency providers, not-for-profits as well as centre management and the local team, gave us an excellent blueprint that ultimately resulted in lowering the unemployment rate in the Illawarra by a full 1%,” said Ms. Anson.
She added that JobGetter’s insights into the challenges that job seekers have in finding work gives them a clear advantage. “JobGetter exists to help job seekers and our insight into their issues is unparalleled. We run the largest survey of Australian job seekers nationally that gives us real data on what those challenges truly are,” Ms. Anson said.
“JobGetter is increasingly working with Government, education and industry sectors to find ways to better transition people into work or from job to job in what is increasingly a changing world of work,” she said. “But at the end of the day, it’s all about the job seeker. Telling them what skills they need to the work they want, and where those jobs are, is what we do better than anyone else.”
