While reporting record figures and appointing new management, UK market leader rightmove.co.uk has also been working on another project behind the scenes – rightmoveplaces.co.uk.
Without even a completed FAQ section, rightmoveplaces.co.uk is very much in beta release. However the website is gradually gathering contributions from people reviewing their local area.
rightmoveplaces.co.uk says it is “a website where you can rate and review UK cities, towns, villages and suburbs, and where you can promote or talk about, well, just about anything related to your place.”
“We are a bunch of Rightmovers who are passionate about the social web, and who would love to see rightmoveplaces.co.uk being used by home movers and local residents alike to promote their cities, suburbs, towns and villages,” the website’s “about us” page continues.
rightmove.co.uk spoke to talkaboutlocal.org.uk about the new website, saying there are no plans for advertising and that it is meant to give the flavour of a locality and link out to other websites with more information. Australian market leader realestate.com.au created a similar offering when it took over streetadvisor.com.au in 2009 to create Local Voices, however this does now offer advertising.
rightmove.co.uk tells propertyportalwatch.com that it plans to launch rightmoveplaces.co.uk over the coming months, saying it offers agents the opportunity to demonstrate their local knowledge and further their profile in front of landlords, tenants, vendors and buyers.
“Local agents tend to be among the most informed people in a town and so sharing this knowledge on rightmoveplaces.co.uk will be a great way of raising their local profile within an informal social media setting,” says rightmove.co.uk director Miles Shipside. “Savvy agents who are able to contribute interesting local content and discussion will gain real value from the site, though it is important for them to also understand the correct protocols which are part and parcel of this new media.”
