According to a Wall Street Journal article, Uber knowingly rented cars which were defective and at risk of catching fire to its Singapore drivers.
The Journal cited internal emails and other documents indicating Uber’s Singapore unit bought over 1,000 Vezel SUVs that maker Honda Motor Co Ltd had recalled due to an electrical fault.
It seems that Uber’s local management knew about the recall, and that the cars which the company purchased and rented out had not been repaired.
In January one of the Vezel vehicles went up in flames; the ride-hailing firm later said that it had fixed the problem.
An Uber representative said in a statement that as soon as they learned of a Honda Vezel from the Lion City Rental fleet had caught fire, they took swift action to correct the problem, in close coordination with Singapore’s Land Transport Authority.
A spokesperson for Singapore’s Land Transport Authority said in a statement that it had been “closely monitoring the recall and rectification progress for affected Honda Vezels.”
An Uber spokesman in Singapore declined to elaborate on whether management knowingly rented out defective vehicles, directing Reuters to the company statement. The spokesman said all vehicles had now been repaired.
