Two brothers from Arizona, USA have been charged with theft and fraud after running an employment scam through the popular classifieds portal Craigslist.com.
The brothers posted help wanted ads on Craigslist for clerical and administrative jobs. Those who were interviewed were told they needed better credit, because “all employees were considered investors in the company,” according to the Arizona Attorney General’s office.
The brothers told the potential employees that if they got loans from banks, the brothers would repay the loans, but failed to do so. Approximately $187,776 was allegedly stolen from 18 victims.
Aaron and Matthew Blodgett will be sentenced in March and face up to three years in prison.
