Leading ride-share app Uber will be launching a data initiative that record both real-time and long-term trends in road congestion in Johannesburg later this year.
Mapping of Cape Town’s roads is already underway with their fleet of driver-owned vehicles, but the new initiative will extend the service to urban planners and other entities, such as emergency services, in Johannesburg by around the June this year.
Speaking on Thursday at a Transport Forum seminar at the University of Johannesburg, Uber SA head of public policy Yolisa Mashilwane said e system would allow for longer term trends on congestion to be mapped by time, day, month — or any chosen periods of a year.
The mapping in Cape Town is part of a larger global initiative, “Uber Movements” where the company plans to collect travel information in order to improve real-time data readings and expand into courier services.
