A class action lawsuit against Zillow, brought by a man against the portal for allegedly disclosing personally identifiable information, has been dismissed.
Guillermo Mata filed against Zillow in June 2024, but both parties have now agreed to dismiss the case without prejudice, meaning Mata could theoretically refile against Zillow in the future. Mata and Zillow will cover their own legal fees and costs.
Mata's lawsuit claimed Zillow and its syndication partner Redfin used tracking technology to send personal information, such as names, email addresses, and website activities, to websites including Reddit, Meta, and Microsoft—via third-party tracking pixels used for its guided video tours.
The original lawsuit read:
[The] defendant knew that such tracking technology would transmit site visitors’ activity, including records of which video tours they have watched, as the entire purpose of implementing such technology is so that Defendant can target advertisements or send marketing emails through the technology’s third-party providers.
