India's MagicBricks to be Boycotted After Social Media Backlash

May 7, 2025

The president of India's National Association of Realtors (NAR-India) has instructed all members to discontinue all listings and advertisements from MagicBricks until the portal operator apologises for videos published online.

NAR-India president Amit Chopra said agents should cease all business engagements with MagicBricks—with immediate effect—until a public apology and commitment to respect brokers is issued.

The controversy started last week when MagicBricks published several videos online that NAR-India alleges misrepresent the importance and professionalism of brokers nationwide. The videos were removed shortly after publication.

An NAR-India statement said:

MagicBricks has historically thrived on the contributions of real estate brokers, agents, and professionals. However, their recent marketing campaigns have crossed the line, projecting a narrative that undermines the brokerage profession while continuing to profit from the same ecosystem.

Chopra added that "NAR-India stands for ethical practice, professional dignity, and consumer trust. Innovation is welcome but misrepresentation and disrespect are not. Let us uphold the dignity and trust of our profession. Full cooperation is expected from all members."

Meanwhile, Sumanth Reddy, chairman at NAR-India, said:

"This is not just about a single campaign—it’s about years of silent undermining finally being called out. Brokers are not optional participants in Indian real estate, they are the backbone. Platforms must recognise and respect that. This directive is a collective stand for dignity, fairness, and the future of our profession."

A MagicBricks spokesperson said:

"At MagicBricks, we deeply value the contribution of the broker community in shaping India’s real estate ecosystem. We remain committed to empowering them with innovative classified solutions and SaaS tools, designed to streamline their workflows, enhance efficiency, and drive their business growth. We work with more than 25,000 brokers every year as their trusted partners.

"Recently, however, an isolated incident occurred where a few young interns posted a couple of videos which did not align with these guidelines. The videos were promptly removed when it came to our notice."
