Those from rural areas of Myanmar have been coming to Yangon in search of a better life, and with it come greater economic opportunities to benefit both citizens and the region alike. As foreign investors open up more businesses here, the need for qualified employees has also become greater.

To meet this need, local start-up New Day, or Neh Thit in the Myanmar language, built a website to connect blue collar job seekers and employers, said Ngwar Bo Mee, Head of Customer service at New Day. “But with market demand extending well beyond minimum wage jobs, we decided to  include white-collar workers. Firms that use online recruitment services find more white-collar workers. We help them find entry-level and mid-level people,” Ngwar Bo Mee said.

There are currently 170,000 job seekers and over 40 employers using Neh Thit, but the firm’s long-term goal is to create a transparent human resources and hiring system for the country.

New Day was set up in 2017 by Conor Smith, an American. The website aims to help job seekers in Myanmar find jobs in a single place and to give businesses access to a pool of applicants. The start-up won Best Start-up Award from Seedstars Yangon in 2018, and has received funds from the GSMA Ecosystem Accelerator Fund and the MIT Inclusive Innovation Challenge team.

We sat down with Ngwar Bo Mee to discuss New Day’s operations, plans, and the challenges of running a jobs portal:
