CoStar Scores Minor Legal Win After Two Move Inc. Fraud Claims Thrown out

November 1, 2024

CoStar Group has scored another point in its ongoing legal spat with rival portal Realtor.com's parent company, Move Inc.

On Tuesday this week, a federal district judge approved CoStar's motion to dismiss two out of six claims made by Move in an amended complaint—but the same judge then gave Move three weeks to file another amended complaint.

The thrown-out complaints alleged that CoStar and former Realtor.com editor James Kaminsky broke the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act as well as the Comprehensive Computer Data Access and Fraud Act.

A Realtor.com spokesperson told Real Estate News that it was "pleased that the judge rejected all but one of CoStar’s arguments", while CoStar said it was "grateful that the Court granted its motion to dismiss Move’s statutory trade secrets claims."

CoStar and Kaminsky continue to defend themselves in a suit that was brought against them in July this year, claiming CoStar and Kaminsky had illegal access to sensitive documents that gave CoStar's residential portal Homes.com an unfair advantage in accelerating the platform via Realtor.com's insights.
